New MS JDBC Driver for SQL Server 2005 PDF Print
Written by Content Team

Microsoft says that "In its continued commitment to interoperability, Microsoft will release and support an updated Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) driver for SQL Server 2005.

"The SQL Server 2005 JDBC Driver beta download is available to all SQL Server 2005 users at no additional charge, and provides access to SQL Server 2005 from any Java application, application server, or Java-enabled applet."

"This is a Type 4 JDBC driver that provides de-facto database connectivity through the standard JDBC application program interfaces (APIs) available in J2EE (Java2 Enterprise Edition)."

Those using the 2000 JDBC Driver are expected to be pleasantly suprised with the new driver. Amongst other features, it support JDBC 3.0, integrated authentication and offers better performance.

Interoperability, "No additional charge" and Java... words unrelated to Microsoft, all featuring in one news story. :-)

Are there any other free/commercial drivers available for SQL Server 2005?

You may want to give the new one a chance. It is completely unrelated to the previous offering and as the marketing splash mentions you might "be pleasantly suprised".

An important thing to keep in mind is that this driver (unlike the previous) has a dedicated full time team for development and support. We are really trying to do the right thing here and given the tight timeline (we intend to ship within a "reasonable window" of Sql Server 2005 launch) we need all the help we can get.

I would like to encourage you to test this driver out, you can submit bugs online (at http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/productfeedback/default.aspx) or even better you can join the microsoft.public.sqlserver.jdbcdriver newsgroup for beta related discussions.

I hope to see you there,
Angel Saenz-Badillos [Microsoft]
